Thailand’s biggest drug bust ever?

Over 2 million methamphetamine pills, as well as 30 kg of crystal metaphetamine (ice) and 20 kg of heroin were found during a police search of a rented house in Pathum Thani.
The search came after Highway Police tried to arrest a suspected drug dealer on Friday at Phra-in Racha sluice gate in Khlong Raphipat, in the Bang Pa-in district of Ayutthaya. During the getaway the suspect lost control of his car which then crashed into a canal running in the middle of the motorway.
Despite crashing into the canal, the driver managed to escape.
Police found two bags of ice – weighing three grams – as well as the ID from an organisation bearing the name of Mr Nipon Kanchart. Police also recovered a name card of a Lieutenant General.
Pathum Thani Provincial Police Deputy Superintendent Pol Lt Col Jirawat Naewchampa said that there was no one actually in the rented house at the time of the police raid, but that there was a car parked on the premises.
During a search of a room under the stairs, police were surprised to discover over 2 million methamphetamine pills, all neatly wrapped in packs.
There was also more than 30 packages of ‘ice’ – each weighing-in at one kilogramme each, as well as more than 20 packages of heroin – again, each package weighing around one kilogramme.
Police have estimated the find at around one billion baht ‘street value’.
According to an initial investigation, Mr Nipon rented the house for Bt20,000 per month from a former beauty queen and TV star.
Provincial Police Bureau 1 Commissioner Pol Maj Gen Kamronvit Thoopkrachang has inspected the seized drugs, and reported to Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung.
